DETESTATION Reviews
Detestation Reviews
Andrew Dalton, Tin Bean Fanzine, 3/18/97
Oooooo, ahhhhh, oohhoohhoo, what have we here? Some grunt and grind
from New Mexico. Very old C Corpse style grunting mixed with the almost
forgotten about Swedish guitar aura. (the lofty, floaty high pitch in four
measure stuff. duh, Unleashed style) Enough, there a bunch of noisy guitar
blazes, double bass, and full speed ahead death grind work here to keep
any miserble person content. I do not have the lyrics, I haven't sent my
dollar to TOMMY T yet, but the ad says there is a bunch of political
ramblings, bitchings, what have you, but I do not have the lyrics and
can't understand anything, so... Besides that there are 17 songs (yeah it
is pretty damn long), some great poppy grunting grooves and a bunch of
noisy fun for the entire family.
Toad, Static Zine
Brutal grind with the most indecipherable vocals I've heard yet. They
have a bit of an industrial influence in the rhythms. Also some very cool
and quite unusual guitar passages. Production is good and the tape comes
pro dubbed with a color cover.
Sanguinary Surroundings Zine
Spewing gore from New Mexico, Detestation presents these 17 tracks of
hate that total almost an hour of music. Mixing death, grind, and
industrial into a pulverizing combination with a ton of intensity. Those
of you who despise industrial like I, don't worry - there are only a few
songs with that hated element. And it's usually mixed with death-grind, so
the result is tolerable. The sound's good.
Demo Reviews
From a state which isn't so noticeable of having anything brutal,
this 4 piece is very brutal and wallop your ears into a bloosy pulp with
fast voracious grind! Very reminscient of early Napalm Death, Terrorizer,
and Unseen Terror (without the humor). This actually would fit perfectly
with the old Red Light Records artists Morgue, Paralysis, and Cianide,
but for now it's a little behind the times. There are 17 tracks however
and it's over an hour, worth the money you pay for it. Color J-card,
nicely printed inlay and good production.
Metal Curse (PO Box 302 Wlkhart, IN 46515-0302)
On first spin, this appears to be fairly standard, if brutal death
metal. Upon repeated listens, I began to notice a few interesting things
going on. These guys apparently have a variety of influences, and
sometimes let them come thru, as in the very short "Silenced", which is
industrial, the almost ambient "Dissolved", and also in the riffs, which
can be strange but are always good. Occasionally the vocals on the album
sound sort of overdriven, but that may not be the band's fault. A more
ambitious release than I initially realized. I like it when it takes a
few listens to really "get it". Rating: 8.75 --Ray
Under The Volcano (PO Box 236, Nesconset, NY 11767)
Extreme Death-grind metal. If you think Earache and Roadrunner
releases are too commercial then this is for you. A real find for
Incantation and Mortician fans. This is a DIY CD, so if you are
supporting the Death Metal underground pick this up. --Mr. Hymson
Chris Wojcik (2330 Gateway Oaks #129, Sacramento, CA 95833)
This self-produced is beyond brutal. First song starts it off with a
cross between the odd riffing of Atrocity combined with the brutality of
Suffocation, but even to a more extreme level. Each song is done a bit
differently, with a lot of styles but every one is crushingly brutal.
Just listen to that drum sound run you over. This is at least as brutal
as "Effigy of the Forgotten" by Suffocation or "Butchered by Birth" by
Cannibal Corpse but this band has so much more. Industrial and hardcore
influenced stuff is used as well, but with good results. Sure some songs
sound like their influences, but others branch out into their own
territory. This is a must for fans of sheer destruction.
Sin Magazine (1586 Jefferson St, Muskegon MI 49441 USA)
This CD contains 17 songs of grinding death metal. You may have known
this band as Detest in the past. Their sound has changed a lot since
hten. This release shows very little industrial influences. The vocals
are low and not understandable (like old Cannibal Corpse). The lyrics are
about gore, pot, society, & other stuff. The guitar is groovy as opposed
to technical. There is even a slight use of a piano on this release! Many
time changes are present in each song. "Massacre of Hate" is a very
brutal and intense release! --Violin
Shadows of Michelangelo (Japan)
This contains 17 songs that is typically played Grind Core plus
alpha. Why do core style bands want to put as many tunes on a tape or
album? Anyway, as I said, "plus alpha". It means these songs are really
deep. Deeper than others have ever done because I guess the background of
the band is not only grind, it is also a lot of death flavors such as
types of Internal Bleeding, Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy... etc. So it is
absolutely American taste. One of enjoyable tapes. Good. --F.L.
Metal Core (NJ)
Some sick grind/death metal. This is similar to older Cannibal
Corpse especially the vocals. There are some fast grind partsz on here
that I liked a lot. Production is on target as well. 17 tunes to fry your
brain with. This is value for your money as you get a lot of good music
for your buck.
The Death Chamber (Rock Warrior, PA)
So they ditched the industrial thang for a more intense death metal
approach, all I can say is holy @$!*. Their latest 15 song demo kind of
makes Napalm Death sound like Slaughter. It's too heavy for my ass. But
for those of you who like this style of music this is definitely a must
have!! It's 55 minutes long and is available by contacting DSBP...

Baxter's Anti-Zine (PO Box 7751 Moore, OK 73153)
Detestation sent me a copy of a few songs off their new CD "Massacre
of Hate" and this is some very hard and heavy death/grind. I must admit,
when I first listened to it I said to myself, "Just another grind band...
but I must admit this is some good stuff that all into this kind of music
should get a copy. I intend on getting a copy of the CD for myself. These
guys are relentless and know what they're doing, and to think I thought
only good grind core came from overseas, I was wrong! Tommy T sent this
tape which was released on DSBP along with a few other heavy bands. They
are looking for more bands to distribute so if youre in a
death/grindcore/industrial/hardcore or other heavy death band looking
for some small but legit distribution then write and ask for info. In the
meantime, get this CD and check out Detestation and get yourself
slamming. God this music is melting my brain!
Sick Things (AZ)
They sent a 6 song sampler. Their CD has 17 songs and is 60 minutes
of diverse death/grindcore/industrial. What can I say about this? My dog,
Draven, looked at the speakers funny when I started playing the tape. It
must've been the vocals! They're the growling type of vocals, I guess
it's the "typical" style of bands like this. The music is pretty good! Of
course it's seriously fast fast fast! I don't really know what to say
about this since I'm not a death metal fan. If you're looking for some
majorly brutal death/grind metal then you might want to check this band
out.
Left To Rot (AZ)
This band plays death/industrial/hardcore/speed/grindcore all into a
death metal fashion. Actually it's pretty cool, low guttural vocals,
riffs & drums in different music genres. Sometimes it has tendencies to
sound like that Suffocation sound but not the whole time. Harsh lyrics of
gore, reality, & fucked up society. There is some nice ideas spewed forth
on their CD. Different paces/feels, the listener will not be bored. This
will appeal to a lot of people. Released on their own label: DSBP. Great
sound, bloody art, color cover, lyrics, photos, 17 songs, 60 minutes. --MJM
Dreaded zine (IL)
Yes!!! I can't get enough of this sick shit. This rules!! Sick grind
core, industrial, death style that spews a chunk full of intestinal rot.
Every sicko should own this. Available on chrome cassette or CD. Exciting
cover art in red, white and black from the "Horde of Gore" David
Maldonado. Lyrix of the putrid bile and decay are also enclosed. Get a
hold of these guys soon.
